World Junior Curling Championships 2024: Preview

Men's Competition:

China, the reigning champions, has brought a new team to the championship. Germany, skipped by Benjamin Kapp, won silver at the previous two editions of the championships and is looking to go one step higher on the podium this year.

Scotland, another team targeting the podium, took bronze last year and comes to the tournament with one change in their line-up. Two of their team members, Logan Carson and Archie Hyslop, won gold medals in the mixed competition at this year's Youth Olympic Games in Gangwon, Korea.

Another Youth Olympic champion in the men's competition is Norway's skip Lukas Hoestmaelingen, who won gold in the mixed team event in Lausanne in 2020.

Denmark's Jacob Schmidt and Nikki Jensen competed at the recently concluded Youth Olympics in Korea as well. Both won silver in the mixed team event, whereas Schmidt added another silver medal to his name in the mixed doubles competition.

Canada, the United States, Denmark, and New Zealand are four teams that secured their places at this world championship by reaching the semi-finals at the World Junior-B Championships in December 2023.

Women’s Competition:

Scotland women's team is the reigning world champion. Four of their current team members were part of last year's line-up as well. Their skip, Robyn Munro, won a World Mixed Championship silver medal in 2022.

2922 World champions Japan took silver last year. Two of their team members, Ueno Yui and Miura Yuina, were part of both former podium-finisher line-ups.

Looking at Norway's women's team, all four members were part of last year's bronze medal-winning squad. Their third player, Nora Oestgaard, and second thrower, Ingeborg Forbregd, are the 2020 Youth Olympic mixed team competition winners.

China, Canada, Germany, and Türkiye women secured their slots at this championship by reaching the semi-finals at the World Junior-B Curling Championships 2023 last December.
